Which Loctite Do You Actually Need? A Scenario-Based Buying Guide

I'm the office administrator for a 50-person packaging company. I handle all purchasing—roughly $120,000 a year across eight vendors. I report to operations and finance, which basically means I hear about it from both sides when something goes wrong.

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I never expected to become the unofficial Loctite expert. But that's the thing about this job: you end up buying everything, and you learn fast because your credibility depends on it. Honestly, nobody warns you about that part.

So let me save you some trouble. If you search "which Loctite is best," you'll get a lot of "red is strongest, blue is medium, green is for wicking" comparison charts. Technically true, practically useless. The real question is what you're trying to do. There's no universal answer—it depends on the scenario.

Here are the four buying scenarios I deal with most, and what I've actually learned.

Scenario 1: Fasteners That Loosen → Loctite Blue (242)

Our maintenance team asks me this all the time: "Should we use blue or red threadlocker?"

The lazy answer is "red, because it's stronger." The right answer—or rather, the one that keeps me out of trouble—is "depends on whether anybody needs to get this apart again."

Loctite Blue (242) is a medium-strength threadlocker for fasteners up to about 3/4 inch. It stops bolts from vibrating loose, but you can still remove it with hand tools. We use it on our printing presses and conveyor systems. On our presses, the registration bolts worked loose almost weekly before we switched to 242.

Loctite 271 (Red) is high-strength and meant to be permanent. To remove it, you typically need heat around 500°F and serious torque. That's fine for something you never plan to disassemble. But on production equipment at 7 AM? Permanent threadlocker is how you turn a 20-minute adjustment into a half-day breakdown.

I don't have hard data on industry-wide downtime costs, but based on our own numbers, one hour of unplanned downtime costs us roughly $1,800 per line. A tube of Loctite 242 costs about $8. The "stronger" choice is actually the more expensive choice once you factor in the future teardown.

So the rule I keep going back to: if you ever need to remove the fastener, don't reach for the permanent stuff.

Scenario 2: Engine Leaks and Seals → Loctite Automotive Sealants

Another thing I learned: "sealant" isn't one category. Loctite automotive sealants include RTV silicone and anaerobic flange sealants, and they solve different problems.

For our delivery vans and plant vehicles, we use Loctite 598 RTV Silicone (black) for oil pans, valve covers, and timing covers. It resists oil and coolant, holds up to about 400°F, and stays flexible on surfaces that aren't perfectly flat. It's also sensor-safe, which matters on modern vehicles.

But for metal-to-metal joints with tight tolerances—like the transmission housing on one of our forklifts—an anaerobic gasket maker like Loctite 515 is the better call. It cures without air in the joint and creates essentially zero gap. The catch: it can't bridge gaps. If the mating surfaces are dimpled or scratched beyond about a 0.010-inch gap, RTV is the safer choice.

General guide:

  • Rigid joint, clean surfaces, tight fit → anaerobic flange sealant (Loctite 515)
  • Flexible housing, imperfect surfaces, or engine exterior → RTV silicone (Loctite 598)

Scenario 3: Broken Parts That Need a Quick Fix → Loctite Instant Adhesives

This is probably the most misused category in the whole Loctite lineup. People want one "super glue" that works for everything. It doesn't exist.

Loctite instant adhesives—cyanoacrylates—are fantastic for small, close-fitting parts. Broken plastic tabs, metal brackets, wire guides, a belt guard on a packaging line. Clean surfaces, tight fit, and you get a fixture-level bond in seconds.

Here's the part that surprises most people: when someone asks for the "strongest" instant adhesive, I often recommend the rubber-toughened formula (Loctite 480) over the flashy "maximum strength" ones. It's less brittle under impact and absorbs vibration. We learned this after a bracket on our shrink-wrap line kept snapping with a well-marketed max-strength super glue. Same prep, same application—broke within a month. The rubber-toughened version has held up for eight months now.

But the bigger lesson is knowing when an instant adhesive is the wrong tool. If there's any real gap, or the part will face heat, chemicals, or heavy load, skip the cyanoacrylate entirely and use a two-part epoxy like Loctite EA E-20HP. It's slower, but it's built for structural jobs.

If it has to bond in under 60 seconds, use an instant adhesive. If it has to survive a long time, use the right one for the material. Those aren't always the same product.

Scenario 4: Manuals and Time-Critical Shipping → How Much Is a Flat Rate Padded Envelope?

Now for the thing nobody warns you about when you take an admin job: you also become the person who finds manuals and ships parts.

No, you don't need to pay $10 for a manual PDF. Start at the manufacturer's site—that's a five-minute fix that saves money and a questionable download.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In

  • Fastener loosening but needs to come back off for maintenance? Start with Loctite Blue (242). Keep Red (271) for permanent installs only.
  • Sealing a leak on a vehicle? Ask whether the joint is flat and rigid. Tight and metal-to-metal? Anaerobic. Imperfect surfaces or flexible housing? RTV silicone.
  • Bonding small parts that will see vibration? Use a rubber-toughened instant adhesive instead of the flashiest "max strength" tube. Gaps or harsh conditions? Go epoxy.
  • Need a manual or replacement part fast? Check the manufacturer's website first—yes, even that THX9421R5021WW manual is free. Then choose shipping based on what certainty is worth to you.

That last one matters more than you'd think. In my experience, the extra few dollars for shipping certainty pays for itself almost every time—not because I like spending money, but because the cost of being wrong is always higher than the cost of being sure.
